Viristar and Ability Expeditions To Advance Outdoor Safety in Borneo & Beyond

Viristar and Borneo-based Ability Expeditions are collaborating to bring best-in-class outdoor risk management trainings to Southeast Asia and around the world.

Ability Expeditions, based in Kota Kinabalu in Malaysian Borneo, is a recognized leader in providing outdoor education experiences for school and youth groups, as well as team-building activities, with a focus on quality and safety. In addition to adventurous treks and residential adventure centre programs in the heart of the jungle, AE now makes available outdoor safety courses through a collaboration with Viristar.

Ability Expeditions is able to provide the Risk Management for Outdoor Programs course, conducted by Viristar, to outdoor, travel-based and experiential professionals at a special discounted rate. Participants can access this world-class safety training at 10 percent off the standard tuition cost.

What is the Course Like?

The Risk Management for Outdoor Programs course takes place online, over several weeks. The class includes live video-conference sessions once a week. In between, participants engage with video-based lecture presentations, readings, interactive online role-playing activities, quizzes, and more.

Participants learn essential safety standards and best practices in outdoor safety, learn about essential legal principles, and complete an outline of a comprehensive Risk Management Plan. Topics include medical screening, incident management, media relations, decision-making under stress, systems thinking, and much more.

Who Is Ability Expeditions?

For over 15 years, Ability Expeditions has blended adventure, education and service in immersive learning expeditions for youth and adult audiences.

AE’s Adventure Centre along the banks of Borneo’s Kiulu River features the only double zip line and high ropes tower on the island of Borneo, and well-appointed accommodations for 160. This is the launching area for expeditions up Mount Kinabalu, whitewater rafting adventures, community service projects, and environmental conservation activities. Ability Expeditions has worked with many of the leading international schools in east Asia, as well as many corporate and other groups.

Ability Expeditions is led by David Powell, who has over 25 years’ experience directing outdoor and adventure education programs in Borneo.

Is the Risk Management for Outdoor Programs Course For Me?

The multi-week online outdoor safety training is designed to be useful for outdoor, experiential, wilderness, travel-based and adventure professionals anywhere in the world. The course is particularly applicable to those who currently or may in the future hold managerial responsibility for outdoor or experiential programs.

Participants must speak and understand English, and can enroll in any of the training courses offered regularly throughout the year.
