Viristar has launched an accreditation system for adventure programs. The Adventure Safety Accreditation service provides reasonable assurance than an adventure activity provider has met good practice standards for risk management of adventure activities.
Viristar developed its accreditation program following years of requests from adventure activity providers around the world for Viristar to provide such a service.
The Adventure Safety Accreditation offering fills a gap in the market for a comprehensive, systems-based safety accreditation applicable to providers of adventure tourism and similar programs.
Viristar’s safety standards, on which the accreditation system is built, have been developed and refined over a period of years, and have been used as a component of Viristar’s training and consulting services.
Providers of adventure programs are eligible to apply for accreditation.
The standards have received positive reviews from experienced professionals in adventure travel and outdoor recreation and education sectors.
Viristar’s standards are distinguished from others such as ISO 21101, which is restricted to covering high-level adventure safety management system requirements only, and ISO 31031:2024 – Managing risk for youth and school trips, which ISO states is a non-certifiable guidance standard without conformance requirements.
There are 100 standards in the latest version of the Adventure Safety Accreditation Standards Manual. The standards cover topics such as Standard Operating Procedures, safety culture, Hierarchy of Controls, emergency planning, and more.
The Adventure Safety Accreditation process with Viristar has five steps:
- Submit application for accreditation
- Complete Organizational Self-Evaluation
- Site visit
- Accreditation decision
- Activities during accreditation period
